Big Second Half Fuels Memphis 83-65 Win over Grambling
Nov 19, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Josh Pastner wins 150th game of his coaching career
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 16 points as the Memphis Tigers ran off a 22-5 run early in the second half to pull away in an 83-65 Memphis win at FedExForum on Thursday evening.
"We started a little slow, a little sluggish, but we found a way to get the win." said Pastner, who won his 150th game as the Memphis Tiger head coach. "When we pressed later in the first half, it changed the pace a little bit. I thought we were a little paralyzed against the zone so our pace was a little bit slower. In the second half, we made the adjustment of really attacking to the high post and the first few possessions there – the first five, six minutes – we just attacked everything in that high-post area there and that loosened things up."
Dedric Lawson hit 5-of-10 shots from the field and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe en-route to leading the team in scoring for the second consecutive game. The older of the two brothers, K.J. Lawson, scored 13 points and hit 8-of-10 free throws and his only three-point attempt, while Ricky Tarrant Jr. and Trahson Burrell each scored a dozen points in the win. Two other players, Shaq Goodwin and Markel Crawford each scored eight points.
Three Tigers – Dedric Lawson, Burrell, and Nick Marshall – each pulled down six rebounds as Memphis out-rebounded Grambling 39-to-32 in the contest. Crawford dished out four assists, while Dedric Lawson led the way for the host team with two blocked shots.
Memphis shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field, and hit 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from long range. The Tigers also shot and made a season-high free throw total, going 28-of-35 (80 percent) as a squad, while posting a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the third consecutive game.
Memphis found itself trailing 10-4 early in the game behind a strong shooting effort from Grambling State; however, a 6-0 Memphis run knotted the score at 10 apiece, and the host took its first lead of the game on a Trahson Burrell tip-in with 13:06 to play in the opening period.
Grambling fought back and led by four with 5:22 to play in the opening period before Memphis opened a 9-0 run to take a five-point lead, as the host Tigers led by four at 40-36 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Memphis came of the locker room with a fury, out-scoring Grambling 9-2 to start the second stanza, pushing to an 11-point lead, and never looked back. The lead grew to as many as 25 with 5:42 to play in the game following a K.J. Lawson free throw, and Memphis cruised the rest of the way in the lopsided victory.
The Tigers remain at home for the next game, a Monday, November 23 against UT Arlington starting at 7:30 p.m. at FedExForum.
