Memphis 5, Arkansas 4 Box Score
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Memphis scratched out the game-winning run in the eighth inning to beat Arkansas 5-4 and extend its current win streak to 11 games Tuesday at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Jacob Elliott and Brandon Montgomery pulled off a double steal in the top of the eighth with Montgomery scoring from third for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Montgomery had legged out a triple with one out while Elliott drew a two-out walk to get runners on the corners. On the double steal, Elliott was already closing on second when catcher Alex Gosser threw up the middle. Pitcher Lance Phillips was supposed to snare the ball but it went to the bag and Montgomery came home for the run.
With the win, Memphis improved to 15-4 and snapped a five-game losing streak to the Razorbacks. Arkansas is now 11-12.
The two teams wrap up the series Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis.
Tickets for Wednesday's game at AZP are $10 and can be purchased online at gotigersgotix.comas well as by calling (901) 678-2331. Fans can also purchase AutoZone Park 3 Packs, which also includes tickets to games against Ole Miss (March 31) and Mississippi State (April 7) for $25.
The Tigers grabbed an early lead with a four run third inning.
Zach Scrhitenthal continued a hot bat from a weekend series in which he batted .625 against Alcorn State with a single from his nine-hole slot to start the third. Darien Tubbs would then extend his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games with a bunt single. The Tigers would load the bases with no outs. Arkansas relief pitcher Josh Alberius chased down a bunt laid down by Jake Overbey but his throw to third to get the lead runner was late.
Kane Barrow delivered a double just inside the right-field line paint to drive in the Tigers' first two runs. Tucker Tubbs would ground out to the right side of the infield to score another run. Chris Carrier's RBI double down the left-field line put the Tigers up 4-0.
Arkansas would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth.
Bobby Wernes led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center. Cullen Gassoway drove in the Razorbacks' run with a base hit to left but was called trying to stretch the play into a double as Barrow in left field fired a strike to second for the putout.
The putout erased any momentum for the Razorbacks who closed out the inning with a ground out and pop up.
Arkansas would get a run in the sixth before Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run homer in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. The homer was Benintendi's sixth of the season.
Memphis reliever Craig Caufield worked the final three innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0. Phillips took the loss to fall to 0-2.
