Despite a 5-for-5 hitting performance by Memphis sophomore Darien Tubbs, Arkansas took advantage of seven walks and three Tiger errors to post a 7-3 win Wednesday at AutoZone Park and split a two-game series.
Memphis, now 15-5, opens American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series against East Carolina starting Friday in Greenville, N.C. Arkansas, 12-12, is in the midst of playing five games in as many days. The Razorbacks return home to open an SEC series against Ole Miss on Thursday.
Memphis' next home game is Tuesday when the Tigers play host to Ole Miss again at AutoZone Park.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Darien Tubbs extended his current hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff double. After Carter White drew a walk, Kane Barrow reached first on an error and Tubbs would score on the play.
In addition to extending his hitting streak, Tubbs has now safely reached base in all 20 Memphis games this season. He became the first Memphis batter since 2011 to have five hits in the same game. The last Memphis player to accomplish the milestone was Chad Zurcher against Eastern Kentucky on March 5, 2011.
Memphis had a chance to add to its lead in the third as Damo DeMatteo and Tubbs both singled to lead off the inning. And a one-out single by Barrow loaded the bases. But Arkansas starter Keaton McKinney would get back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
The Razorbacks rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
After Memphis starter Colton Hathcock got the Hogs' leadoff hitter to ground out for the first out, the Tigers went with reliever Drew Crosby. Andrew Benitendi drew a walk and with two outs, a throwing error allowed Bobby Wernes to reach and put runners on the corners. Rick Nomura's walk loaded the bases.
Memphis reliever Ryan Garner would walk the first runner he faced, Chad Spanberger. Wernes would later score on the Tigers' second error of the inning.
Memphis would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning after the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. DeMatteo and Tubbs led off with singles and Carter White drew a walk. Barrow would ground into a double play and DeMatteo scored on the play.
Arkansas would retake the lead, 3-2 on the first pitch of the sixth inning as Wernes homered deep past the left-center fence.
The Razorbacks would break the game open with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run triple by Benitendi. A sacrifice fly to centerfield by Clark Eagan would score Benitendi and give Arkansas a 6-2 lead.
Arkansas reliever James Teague worked five innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-1. Ryan Garner suffered the loss for the Tigers to fall to 0-1. Garner was one of eight Memphis pitchers in the game. After Hathcock's 3.1 innings of work to begin the game, no Memphis pitcher worked more than 1.1 innings.
