Tigers looking to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
MEMPHIS – Fresh off a 3-2 road win to open American Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night, the University of Memphis volleyball team (10-4, 1-0) will return home to open its home league slate, Sunday, at 1p.m. Memphis will host East Carolina (7-5, 0-1 American) in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in its first conference home match of the season.
East Carolina is closing a two-match road swing to start its league schedule, having lost 3-1 at Cincinnati on Friday night. Memphis also faced Cincinnati last week and after taking a 2-0 lead early in the match, was trailing 13-8 in the fifth, and deciding, set. The Tigers used a 7-0 run to take the conference road win, their first road win of the year.
Memphis will need that same determination on Sunday, as the series matchup between these two squads went to five sets both times last season. Memphis won at East Carolina, 3-2, then the Pirates returned the favor, upending the Tigers 3-2 in Memphis' home finale last year.
Junior outside Catlin Lilly continues to lead Memphis with 3.18 kills per set, but has gotten some help lately from McKenzie Hayes, Oluchi Agomuo and Summer Morgan. All three Tigers are now averaging over 2.5 kills per set and Agomuo is coming in to the Sunday match after tying a career-high with 19 kills on the road at Cincinnati, Wednesday. It was kills from Agomuo and Morgan that sparked Memphis' comeback in the fifth set the last time out, and the Tigers will be looking for a balanced attack to try to keep the Pirates winless on the road in league play, Sunday.
Getting the home win is especially important for Memphis in light of the team's upcoming schedule. Following Sunday's contest, Memphis will play six of its next eight games away from the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, playing at home just three times in the entire month of October.
Admission to the match is free. A post-match clinic will be held for youth in grades eight and under following the completion of the match.
