Tigers Run Away from Vaqueros in Tubby Smith's Debut
Nov 14, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind a career-best game from redshirt freshman K.J. Lawson, the Memphis Tigers were victorious in the debut of new head coach Tubby Smith on Monday night (November 14) at FedExForum.
The win gave new Memphis head coach Tubby Smith his 558th career win, moving him into a tie for 62nd all-time in the NCAA career wins record book, tying with Butler's Tony Hinkle, and now two behind John Kresse of the College of Charleston.
Lawson hit 8-of-10 shots from the field and all three of his long range attempts en route to setting a new career-high with 25 points, while also breaking his career bests in rebounds (8), assists (6), and steals (4).
Preseason American Athletic Conference co-Player of the Year Dedric Lawson opened his season with a dominating 19-point, 15-rebound double-double, while also dishing out two assists, grabbing two steals and adding a blocked shot. Jeremiah Martin scored a career-high 13 points while dishing out a career-high six assists and adding four steals - also a career best. Markel Crawford scored 11 points with three assists and three steals.
Memphis out-rebounded the Vaqueros 50-to-37, while giving out 22 assists against just 18 turnovers while UTRGV had 12 assists and 21 turnovers.
Memphis never trailed in the game, as the Tigers got on the board quickly in the game when Crawford drove home a thunderous two-handed dunk in traffic while being fouled, while the ensuing free throw put Memphis' lead to 3-0, 13 seconds into the game.
The lead fluctuated within single digits, with Memphis leading by five at 25-20 with 11:05 to play in the first half before the Tigers ran off a 15-1 run to lead by 19 after a free throw from Jimario Rivers. The first half lead grew to as many as 21 following a Craig Randall II jumper in the paint; however, UTRGV fought back and closed the gap to 11 heading into the locker room at halftime.
UTRGV scored first in the second half, cutting the gap to nine, and trailed by 12, two minutes into the second stanza before a 15-2 Memphis run pushed the margin to 25 points with just under 14 minutes to play in the game. The Vaqueros would get only as close as 15 the rest of the way as the Tigers cruised to the 19-point victory.
Memphis hit 33-of-69 from the field (47.8 percent), while converting on 7-of-25 (28.0 percent) from long range, and 60 percent (21-of-35) from the charity stripe. UTRGV shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field, and 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Tigers get a day off before returning to action on Wednesday, November 16 for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the Milwaukee Panthers at FedExForum.
