Tigers face Golden Hurricane in must-win match
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis men's soccer team faces a must-win situation this weekend when the Tigers travel to Tulsa for the regular-season finale Friday at 7 p.m. With a victory, Memphis has a chance to qualify for next week's four-team American Athletic Conference Championship in Tampa, Fla.
"Last week, we knew that a tie or a loss would put us out of it and the guys responded well," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "It's the same scenario this week, just in a different place. We have to get it done and the guys know that. It's just a matter of taking care of ourselves and if we show up it gives us a chance to win."
The Tigers (8-7-1, 2-3-1 AAC) picked up a big win in their last match, 2-0, over No. 25 UConn on a pair of goals by freshman Jackson Morse. The Plano, Texas native leads Memphis with six goals this season. He ranks fourth overall in the American in scoring and is tied for first among freshmen in the league.
Morse received American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in the win over UConn. Junior Jake Leeker was named the Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season after he posted his sixth shutout. Senior defender Jordan Klipsch was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Like the Tigers, Tulsa is also led offensively by a freshman. Forward Matthew Puig is the team's leading scorer with six goals and 13 points. Senior midfielder Ray Saari has five goals and four assists, while only playing in 11 of the team's 16 matches.
Tulsa is unbeaten in its last five matches, including a win at Cincinnati last week. The Golden Hurricane are 8-4-4 with a 3-2-1 league record.
Tulsa has a narrow lead in the all-time series with Memphis, 5-4-3. Last season, Tulsa spoiled the Tigers' Senior Day at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be held November 11 & 13 at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on the campus of USF. The host Bulls have already locked up the top seed in the tournament. Sunday's championship match will be at 11 a.m. (CT) on ESPN3.
