Second half goals push Tulsa over Memphis
TULSA, Okla. – The 2016 season ended Friday evening for the University of Memphis men's soccer team after falling to Tulsa on the road by a score of 2-0. The Tigers finish the season with an 8-8-1 overall record and 2-4-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
"This program is going in the right direction, on and off the field," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "We're getting kids of character that take care of school and they represent the University and the program to the upmost respect. That leads to the style and play we have on the field. The kids are taking to the heart what we are trying to coach and believing in the system."
Â
Both teams went through a scoreless first half of action with Memphis forcing Tulsa to make three saves.
Â
After making adjustments at the half, both teams started providing opportunities to score. The Golden Hurricane scored the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute of the match. Jacob Gooden scored his fourth goal of the season after knocking his shot over Jake Leeker from 12 yards out.
Â
Tulsa struck again by taking advantage of a foul in the box by Memphis in the 86th minute. Freshman Matthew Puig converted on the penalty kick to put the match all but out of reach for the visiting Tigers.
Â
Memphis finished the match with 11 shots led by senior Raul Gonzalez with six. Leeker recorded three saves and in all, the Tigers forced eight saves by the Tulsa keeper.
Â
"This is a team that I'm proud of," added Mulrooney.
Â
Memphis will graduate three seniors in Gonzalez, Jordan Klipsch, and Kenneth Kauker and will return its top two scorers in freshmen Jackson Morse and Burke Fahling. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jake Leeker will also be one of many student-athletes to return to Mulrooney's squad in 2017.
