Tigers Fall in Defensive Battle 58-54
Dec 27, 2016 | Men's Basketball

Jeremiah Martin scored a team-high 16 points, hitting 5-of-11 shots from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe, while Dedric Lawson scored 14 and Markel Crawford 12. K.J. Lawson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, while Crawford led the team with three assists and three steals. Dedric Lawson had his third game this season of five or more blocked this season.
The largest lead by either team in the game was six points, as the game was played within two possessions for the entire 40 minutes.
There were five ties and 10 total lead changes, the first two coming within the first two minutes of the game as SMU's Semi Ojeleye made a free throw, only to be countered a minute later by a Martin lay-up and the free throw after the foul. Memphis didn't trail again until a lay-in with 14:17 left in the first half put the Mustangs ahead 9-8.
After a pair of free throws by Dedric Lawson put Memphis back ahead, however, SMU scored six straight points to lead by five at 15-10, and would not trail again in the first half, as the Tigers went into the locker room with a 32-29 deficit.
Dedric Lawson made a free throw, and K.J. Lawson a jumper to start the second half to knot the score at 32, before SMU ran off an 8-2 run to lead by six at 40-34 with 15:06 to play in the game.
From there the Memphis defense tightened, holding SMU without a point for the next five and a half minutes, while putting together a run of their own. Dedric and K.J. Lawson each made a lay-in, before a Crawford three-pointer put Memphis ahead 41-40. The next time down the floor Martin made a pair of free throws to put Memphis ahead by three at 43-40, capping the scoring in the 9-0 Memphis run.
The back-and-forth continued, with Memphis taking a one-point lead after a pair of K.J. Lawson free throws, but SMU scored seven straight points to lead by six. a Martin three-point play cut the deficit to three, only to see SMu drain a three-pointer on the next possession with 3:08 to play in the game.
Both teams went on an offensive dry spell over the next two and a half minutes, as Memphis was able to trim the advantage down to two at 54-52 following a Martin lay-in. SMU iced the game; however, by making all four of its free throw tries down the stretch to hold on to the 58-54 win.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, December 30, when the squad hosts the South Carolina Gamecocks in an 8 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
