If the math of the headline gives you 120, you are correct. What the headline also gives you something that only one other team in the NCAA has done this season, and something that has been tied eight times by Memphis since 1994-95, and that is to have six different players score at least 20 points in a game during a season. Dedric Lawson has seven 20+ point games, while K.J. Lawson has 2. Keon Clergeot, Markel Crawford, Jeremiah Martin, and Craig Randall II each have one. The high-water mark for the program was in 1994-95 when nine players (David Vaughn, Cedric Henderson, Deuce Ford, Chris Garner, Lorenzen Wright, Mingo Johnson, Rodney Newsom, Justin Wimmer, and Michael Wilson) each had at least one game of 20+ points. The only other schools in the country with six players with 20+ points are UMass and Penn State.                                                              Â
Â
Memphis head coach Tubby Smith has a long history with and against South Carolina. From three seasons (1987-1989) he was an assistant coach with the Gamecocks, working with head coach  George Felton. His three seasons with South Carolina the program went 15-14, 19-10, and 19-11, including an NCAA Tournament berth in 1988-89 - the program's first since 1973-74.
Â
Memphis head coach Tubby Smith has faced off against current South Carolina head coach Frank Martin just once, as the only meeting between the two came when Martin was an assistant coach at Cincinnati, and the Bearcats fell to Smith's Kentucky Wildcat squad in the NCAA Second Round.
Â
Memphis and South Carolina were both members of the Metro Conference, from 1983 until 1991. The Metro conference, which had charter members including Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Memphis, Saint Louis, and Tulane, while Florida State, Virginia Tech, Southern Miss, South Carolina, Charlotte, USF, and VCU later joined the league. Memphis stepped away from the league beginning in the 1991-92 season for the Great Midwest Conference. Four years into the Great Midwest Conference, that league and the Metro Conference merged to form Conference USA.
Â
This season, South Carolina features one of the toughest overall defenses in the country. The team ranks seventh in the country in scoring defense, giving up 58.4 points per game. The Gamecocks hold opponents to 35.2 percent shooting from the field, which is the third-best in the country, while the team's 26.4 three-point field goal defense is the best in NCAA Division I.
Â
While Memphis head coach Tubby Smith had previously spent time as an assistant coach at South Carolina, current South Carolina assistant Perry Clark had spent time as head coach at American Athletic Conference foe Tulane. Clark was the head coach of the Green Wave after the program did not field a team for four seasons from 1985-1989. While at Tulane, he was 5-10 all-time against the Tigers. Following his successful stint with the Green Wave, he was head coach of the Miami (Fla.) program from 2000 until 2004. While with the Hurricanes he was 1-0 against Memphis, and he was 0-1 against the Tigers as head coach of Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Â
While South Carolina has yet to beat Memphis on its home court, the program has picked up a handful of wins in the Bluff City. The Gamecocks are 4-5 in neutral site games in Memphis, putting the visitors for the Friday evening game at 4-13 all-time when playing in Memphis. Of note, South Carolina's final neutral site game, a loss against Georgia, was to current University of Memphis head coach Tubby Smith.

Â
Memphis has faced each and every current member of the 14-team Southeastern Conference, and has a 105-80 all-time mark against the conference. Current University of Memphis head coach Tubby Smith, who spent 12 seasons in the league as head coach of Georgia (two seasons) and Kentucky (10 seasons), has a 169-70 all-time records against the league's teams, and has the current sixth-best win percentage (.751), and seventh-most wins (308) in SEC history.
* Does not include two wins (one each against Mississippi State and Tennessee) later vacated from the 2007-08 season.
Â
As a freshman, Dedric Lawson scored 675 points, and has 269 this season for 790 over his career, which puts him well over halfway to 1,000 for his career. If he can duplicate his scoring effort from 2015-16, he will become one of a small number of players in University of Memphis history to reach 1,000 points during their second season with the team. Below are the highest point totals for the first two seasons in University of Memphis history.
