Tigers Rebound on Day Two of Carpet Capital Collegiate
Sep 10, 2016 | Men's Golf
ROCKY FACE, Ga. - After struggling in the opening round in which only one player carded a round of even par or better, the Memphis Tigers responded in a big way on the second day of the three-day tournament with a 289, climbing three spots into 11th place overall in the strong field.
Memphis' 289 (+1) on the day is the fifth-best score in the second round, and the Tigers have a two-day total of 592 (+16). Memphis stands ahead of Delta State (595), Chattanooga (598), and North Florida (600).
Three players, Sydney Chung (-3), Camden Backel (-2), and Kevin Lee (-1) finished their rounds under par on the second day. Lee and Backel each recorded career low rounds, while Chung was a stroke away from tying his collegiate best round.
The Tigers opened their round on the 10th hole on the par-72, 7,012-yard course.Â
Sydney Chung opened the round with a par, before knocking a birdie on the par-3 11th hole. He was never over par on the day, despite bogeying the third hole. He followed with two consecutive pars, and went back under par with a birdie on the par-five 15th hole. A bogey dropped him back to even; however, a birdie and a par to end the first nine holes put the senior at one stroke under par at the turn.
Chung opened his back nine with a par on the par-four first hole, and after three straight pars, a birdie on the par-three fifth hole dropped the senior to three strokes under par. He followed with a bogey on the sixth hole; however, closed his day strong with two pars and a birdie to close the day with a three-under 69, climbing him to a tie of 34th, and two strokes over par for the two rounds.
Newcomer Camden Backel had a rough start to his day, opening with a par on the 10th hole; however, a double-bogey on the par-three 11th hole put the sophomore at two strokes over par. He followed with a birdie on the par-five 12th hole, and went into the turn at one strokes over par, as he recorded a par on each of his final six holes of the front nine.
A birdie to open the back nine pushed him to even par, and he followed with three straight pars. He birdied the par-three fifth hole and the par-five ninth hole to put him at two strokes under par for the day and three strokes over par for the two rounds, tying him for 37th in the field.
Kevin Lee, whose carded a 71, shot two strokes better than his previous collegiate-low, and was over par for a small number of holes on the round. He opened play with back-to-back pars, before he carded his only bogey of the round on the par-five 12th hole. After two more pars, he evened his score with a birdie on the par-five 15th hole, before closing the front nine with three consecutive pars.
He was steady throughout the back nine, starting with eight straight pars, until he closed his round with a birdie on the par-five ninth hole to put him at -1 for the day. His two-round total of +4 has him in a tie for 48th overall in the field.
Nick Giles, who had the team's lowest score in the opening round struggled out of the gate with a double-bogey on the par-four 10th hole, and followed with a bogey a hole later to put him at three strokes over par. He answered with five straight pars before he had a triple-bogey on the par-four 17th hole, as he took a six-over par aggregate score into the turn. His back nine started with seven pars, until he bogeyed the par-three eighth hole, closing the round seven strokes over par, and in a tie for 62nd in the field.
Mikko Kauniskangas had eight pars in his second round; however, had 10 bogeys, and finished the round with a ten-over 82, and stands 77th in the field through two rounds.
The Tigers will open play in the third round on the 10th hole, and will be paired with Georgia Tech and Dalton State. Kauniskangas will tee off at 9:12 a.m., Giles at 9:24 a.m., Â Lee at 9:36 a.m., Backel at 9:48 a.m., and Chung at 10 a.m.
