Men's Golf Climbs to Fifth at Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers shot a second-round 294, climbing one spot into fifth place overall at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate. The Tigers are nine strokes out of first place in the tournament, and seven out of second place.
Memphis' two-day total of 587 stands fifth, just behind Ole Miss (578), College of Charleston (580), Cincinnati (583), and Middle Tennessee (586). McNeese State and Georgia are tied for sixth place directly behind the Tigers with a 588, while Kennesaw State and Troy are tied with a 590.
Freshman Nick Giles shot a one-over 73, which put him at two over par for the two rounds, tied for 13th in the field. Giles started the round strong, opening with back-to-back pars, before he birdied the par-three third hole, dropping him to one stroke under par. After three consecutive pars, he bogeyed the par-five seventh hole, and closed his front nine with two more pars to make the turn at even par.
Through the first seven holes he remained at even par after a bogey on the par-four 12th hole and a birdie on the par-four 14th hole. He bogeyed the 17th hole, closing the day with his second straight 73 on the par-72, 7,368-yard course.
JC Campbell opened his second round with four consecutive pars, before a bogey at the halfway point of the opening round put him at one stroke above par. He evened his score at the turn with a birdie on the par-four ninth hole.Â
Campbell had an up-and-down back nine, as he started with two pars before he bogeyed the 12th and 13th holes, putting him at two strokes over par. He followed with a stretch of two birdies over three holes to drop him back to even par with two holes to play. A bogey on the 17th hole put him back over par, as he closed the round with a 73, and his two-day cumulative score of +4 has him tied for 28th in the field.
Camden Backel, who finished the opening round one stroke over par started out firm with four straight pars; however, a stretch of three consecutive bogeys put the sophomore three strokes over par. His front nine closed with back-to-back pars, putting him at three strokes over par for the first nine holes.Â
His back nine opened with a birdie on the par-four 10th hole, and then bogeyed the 12th hole to return to three strokes over par. A birdie on the 15th hole cut his score to two strokes over par, as he closed his round with three straight pars to see him finish with a 74, and is tied for 18th in the field.
Kevin Lee spent eight of his first nine holes under par, as he birdied the second and fourth holes, while adding a bogey on the fifth hole. Lee closed the front nine with four pars, making the turn at one stroke under par.Â
Lee's streak of pars continued over the first two holes of the back nine, before he bogeyed the 12th, 16th, and 17th holes to give him a two-over 74 for the day, and a +9 for the tournament, which is tied for 60th overall.
Sydney Chung carded a 76 for the second round, and had just one birdie on the day, on the par-four 10th hole. He bogeyed the opening hole, and then had a double-bogey on the fifth hole to put him at three strokes over par through nine holes. He dropped a stroke with his 10th-hole birdie, but gave a stroke back with a bogey on the 12th and the 17th holes, putting him at four strokes over for the round, and four over for the tournament, tying for 28th overall.
The Tigers tee off on Tuesday morning at 10:48 a.m. with Lee, while Campbell goes off at 10:57 a.m., Chung at 11:06 a.m., Backel at 11:15 a.m., and Giles at 11:24 a.m., as the Tigers are paired with McNeese State.
