Tigers Fall to Golden Hurricane 81-71

TULSA, Okla. - Despite 26 points from Dedric Lawson and 20 from Jeremiah Martin, the Memphis Tigers fell on the road on Wednesday evening by an 81-71 final score to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Dedric Lawson hit a career-high four three-pointers, and 9-of-19 overall from the field for his 26 points, while Martin converted on 7-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe.
K.J. Lawson pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and four assists, as Dedric grabbed six rebounds and Jimario Rivers and Martin each had five boards. Jeremiah Martin pilfered four steals for the Tigers.
Memphis (12-5, 2-2 American) shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field and 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
Both squads struggled to find the bottom of the net in the early going, with Tulsa (8-7, 2-1 American) striking first with a lay-in 2:16 into the contest. The Golden Hurricane built up a six-point lead with 11:31 to play in the opening stanza at 22-16.
Memphis proceeded to streak off to a 10-2 run, kicked off by a Lawson three-pointer and capped by a Markel Crawford lay-in nearly three minutes later.
The lead changed hands five more times late in the half; however, with Memphis leading 34-33 with 2:15 to play, the host Golden Hurricane ran off 10 straight points to take a nine-point, 43-34 lead before a Martin lay-in just before the halftime horn to cut the deficit to seven heading into the locker room at halftime.
Tulsa's second half lead grew to as many as 10 points at 51-41 with 15:30 to play in the game.
Facing a double-digit deficit, the Tigers scored 10 of the next 11 points, climbing back to within one on a Martin jumper three minutes later.
The Tigers took their first lead of the second half on a three-point play by Martin.
Five more lead changes followed, as Memphis took a three-point, 66-63 lead on a pair of Crawford free throws with 5:09 to play in the contest.
The teams fought to a tie score at 69-69 with 2:32 left; however, Tulsa closed the game on a 12-2 run, including icing the game by making eight of nine free throws down the stretch in the 10-point Tiger loss.
Tulsa's Junior Etou scored 23 points with 13 rebounds and the double-double. Sterling Taplin scored 17 points with a game-high six assists.
Memphis returns to action on Saturday, January 14, with a 5 p.m. tip-off against the Bulls of USF at FedExForum.
