Crawford Scores a Career-High 30 Points as Tigers Hold On Against USF
Jan 14, 2017 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Markel Crawford scored a career-high 30 points, hitting 10-of-17 shots from the field and 5-of-10 from long range, as the Memphis Tigers held on late against the USF Bulls on Saturday afternoon, winning the game 62-56.
Crawford's total is Memphis' second 30+ scoring game this season after Dedric Lawson scored 35 against Iowa on November 26. Crawford also added seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the winning effort. His previous career-high of 28 came on December 30 against South Carolina, and has scored at least 19 points in four of his last five games.
Junior forward Jimario Rivers recorded his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 shots from both the field and charity stripe. He pulled down five offensive rebounds, while also adding an assist and a blocked shot.
Dedric Lawson scored 11 points, while adding six rebounds, and a game-high five assists and five blocked shots, reaching double-figure scoring for the 17th time in 18 games played this season.
Memphis (13-5, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) made 20-of-57 shots in the game (35.1 percent), and 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tigers out-rebounded the Bulls 39-to-35, and had 17 assists on the team's 20 made baskets.
USF (6-10, 0-5 American) jumped out quickly, scoring the game's first seven points, and led by five at 16-11 with 12:33 to play in the opening half, before the Tiger offense and defense synced up and started to put pressure on the Bulls.
Over the final time of the first half, the Bulls were held to just six points, as Memphis ran off 11 straight points during a stretch, and closed the first half on a 19-6 run. The Tigers held USF to 2-of-13 shooting over the final 12 minutes, pushing out to an eight-point, 30-22 halftime lead after a lay-in from Crawford, giving the junior 13 points in the opening half.
The Tigers took off quickly out of the break, opening a 5-2 run to lead by 11. The Tigers led by as many as 16 points with 9:10 to play after a Dedric Lawson lay-in.
USF countered with two separate 7-0 runs, the final push closing the visitors to within two at 56-54; however, Memphis closed strong, making 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch, all of the points during a 6-0 run over the next 2:03, providing enough cushion for the six-point win.
USF was led by Malik Fitts and Geno Thorpe who each scored 12 points.
The Tigers return to action when the team travels to Houston to take on the Houston Cougars on Thursday, January 19 in an 8 p.m. tip-off.
