Tigers Win Battle with UCF, 70-65

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Four players scored in double figures, led by K.J. Lawson's 16 points and 8 rebounds, as the Memphis Tigers held on against the UCF Knights in a 70-65 slugfest at FedExForum on Sunday afternoon.
Lawson made 5-of-11 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from long range, and 4-of-7 from the charity stripe. Dedric Lawson scored 14 points, while Markel Crawford and Jimario Rivers each scored 12. Jeremiah Martin and Craig Randall II finished just off of the double-figure scoring pace with nine and seven points, respectively.
The Tigers dished out 14 assists in the game, led by Martin's five, while K.J. Lawson dished out four, as Memphis (15-5, 5-2 American) had just six turnovers in the contest. Crawford, Martin, and K.J. Lawson each had two steals, while Rivers had a team-best two blocked shots.
UCF (14-5, 5-2 American Athletic Conference) jumped out quickly, making its first four shots of the game and stretching to a 10-0 advantage just over two minutes into the game.
Memphis countered with eight straight points, capped by a Rivers jumper, to close the gap to two. The Tigers took their first lead of the game with 12:01 remaining on the first-half clock on a three-pointer by Randall; however, UCF scored 12 of the next 15 points to re-take an eight-point lead.
Trailing 24-16 with 7:06 to play in the opening period, the Tigers made the final push of the first half, out-scoring UCF 17-6 over the final seven-plus minutes to take a three-point, 33-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half saw five ties and five more lead changes, the first of the lead changes coming with 8:59 to play in the game when B.J. Taylor drained one of his game-high four three-point baskets, giving UCF a 49-46 lead.
The Tigers answered the deficit with a 10-0 run over the next minute and a half, closed with four straight free throws from Crawford.
UCF would not go away quietly, as the Knights tied the score three minutes later, the the Tigers would not allow the visitors to re-take the lead, as each mini-run was answered with one of their own.
After the Knights knotted the score at 59, K.J. Lawson drained a mid-paint jumper, and after a Tacko Fall free throw, Jimario Rivers and Markel Crawford made lay-ins on back-to-back possessions, the latter of the two was the first step of a three-point play that put Memphis ahead by six.
UCF got as close as three the rest of the way, but could not get any closer, as K.J. Lawson iced the game with two free throws with five seconds left in the five-point Memphis win.
UCF was led by Taylor who scored 16 points, while Fall scored 15 and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Memphis hit 23-of-56 shots (41.1 percent) from the field, and 6-of-17 (35.3%) from long range. UCF made 40.4 percent of its shots (23-of-57), and 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from long range. The Tigers also made 78.3 percent of its charity stripe attempts (18-of-23), while UCF converted on 61.1 percent of its free tries.
