Tigers Take Over in Second Half Against Pirates
Jan 28, 2017 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Trailing by three at halftime, the Memphis Tigers out-scored East Carolina by ten over the final 20 minutes, securing a 57-50 win over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at FedExForum.
K.J. Lawson pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds, a total that also stands as the most in the American Athletic Conference this season, and tied for the third-most in Conference history. He added 12 points for his eighth double-double this season, which is now tied for the fifth-most double-doubles in a season by a freshman.
Jimario Rivers finished a point away from tying his career-high scoring total with 15 points, making 5-of-11 shots from the field and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe, while adding six rebounds.
Dedric Lawson was held to single digit scoring for just the second time this season, but pulled down 14 rebounds - 10 on the defensive end - and dished out two assists for Memphis in the win, helping the Tigers to a +12 rebounding margin.
Jeremiah Martin dominated defensively, setting a new career-high with six steals and tying a career-high with three blocked shots, in addition to scoring five points, pulling down three rebounds, and dishing out three assists.
The leaded changed hands three in the opening five minutes of the game, with Memphis leading 1-0 and 4-3; however, ECU ran off a 6-0 run over a two and a half minute stretch early in the first half to take a lead that it would not give up for the remainder of the half.
The Pirates used another 6-0 run late in the first half to extend its lead to nine - the highest margin in the game for ECU - and led by nine at 22-13 with 2:22 to play before Memphis closed the first half on a 6-0 run, capped by a Rivers jumper to cut the deficit to just three at 22-19 heading into the locker room at halftime.
East Carolina scored first in the second half, but the Tigers ran off six straight points to take its first lead since the early portions of the game on a Martin lay-in two minutes into the second half.
A three-point play briefly gave East Carolina the lead back; however, a Markel Crawford 5-0 run on a jumper and a three-pointer gave the Tigers a three-point lead and had the entire 10,684 in the FedExForum to their feet.
After seeing its three-point lead tied again, Memphis ran off an 11-2 run, capped by a Dedric Lawson lay-in that gave the Tigers the lead for good in the game.
Memphis' second-half lead grew to as many as 12 following a Craig Randall II free throw with 5:21 to play in the game, with the Tigers cruising the rest of the way in the seven-point victory.
Memphis hit just 30.3 percent of its shots (20-of-66) from the field in the win, and 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from long range. The Tigers committed just 11 turnovers - three of those coming in the final 1:19 of the game.
The Tigers held East Carolina to just 50 points, the fewest allowed by Memphis in a conference game since the 2014-15 season against USF on February 14, 2015.
East Carolina made 18-of-55 shots from the field (32.7 percent) and 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
Kentrell Barkley and Jeremy Sheppard each had 13 points in the losing effort for ECU, as Barkley pulled down 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
