Goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg records 10 saves in the draw
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Memphis women's soccer team endured a hard-fought battle Sunday afternoon that resulted in a 0-0 double-overtime draw against No. 17 Cincinnati. The Tigers are now 10-5-2 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play.
"Cincinnati plays with their hearts on their sleeve," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "They are very physical and direct. They have players that really suit their system. They are by far one of the most difficult teams to play in this conference for a reason and they've only allowed seven goals this season for a reason. They are very hard to break down."
It was a battle at Gettler Stadium from the first whistle until the very end of the match.
Both squads had multiple opportunities throughout including the overtime periods, however, the defense on both sides of the ball along with the goalkeeping play of freshman Elizabeth Moberg kept either side from notching a goal. Moberg especially came up big in the final 10 seconds of regulation with two crucial saves.
The Tigers earned eight corners in the match compared to seven by the Bearcats. Eight of the 13 Memphis shots were on goal.
Memphis now has seven shutouts this season while Moberg has three of those. Moberg earned the shutout in both matches this weekend and finished with a total of 13 saves. Marie Levasseur and Jessica Lisi each recorded three shots for Memphis.
"Now we're excited to have a couple of weeks to get better. We haven't really had the opportunity to catch our breath and work on the things we need to work on," added Monaghan.
The Tigers will take the next 12 days off from competition before finishing the regular season on the road at Tulsa on Oct. 27. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
