David Zalzman scored in the 45th minute for his second goal of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team ended the non-conference slate with a 1-0 victory against Central Arkansas Wednesday evening. The win improves the Tigers to 3-7-3 on the year.
Â
"It's a relief," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "A win is what we were looking for. I think it was deserved. We had the opportunities and held them off until the end. I'm pleased with it and we will move on from it with confidence against USF."
Â
After commanding the entire first half, Memphis got on the board with 31.2 seconds on the clock with a goal from David Zalzman. Zalzman was found in the midfield by Adam Bruce who earned the assist on the play. Zalzman's shot from the top of the 18-yard-box split multiple defenders on its way to the back right corner of the net.
Â
The Tigers continued to pressure UCA throughout the entirety of the match. Overall, Memphis finished with 18 shots and nine corner kicks. Memphis' defense allowed just 11 shots and goalkeeper Jake Leeker recorded four saves in the shutout win.
Â
Memphis remains at home for a 1 p.m. match Saturday against USF at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex. The first 250 students to the match will receive free pizza.
