Tigers Unable to Climb Out of Early Deficit, Fall at UCF
Feb 04, 2017 | Men's Basketball
ORLANDO - The Memphis Tigers fell behind 14-0 early in the game against UCF, and were never able to recover, falling 72-57 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a two-game Florida road swing.
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 28 points, including making 14-of-14 free throws, the seventh-highest perfect free throw game in the NCAA this season. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season, and 32nd of his career, now tied with Marion Hilliard for seventh-most in a career in program history. After his scoring effort, Lawson has 995 career points, and is five points away from becoming the program's 52nd member of the 1,000-point club, and just the 10th to do it in his first two seasons.
K.J. Lawson and Jimario Rivers also scored eight points, with K.J. Lawson pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Jeremiah Martin dished out a game-high five assists, with Memphis dishing out 14 assists against just nine turnovers, while forcing 16 UCF turnovers, including five by steal.
Similar to the first meeting between the teams earlier this year in Memphis where the Knights leaped ahead 10-0 early in the game, UCF jumped out to an early lead in this one, jumping out to a 14-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game before K.J. Lawson snapped the streak with a lay-in.
After the Tiger deficit reached 15 points at 17-2, Memphis went on an 11-4 run to climb to within eight at 21-13. The Knights quickly rebounded to stretch the lead back to double-digits, as the hosts took a 17-point, 43-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The UCF second-half lead grew to as many as 18 – the largest deficit the Tigers have faced this season – but Memphis kept clawing back, eventually closing to within nine with 2:11 to play after a Dedric Lawson three-pointer, but could not get any closer as UCF iced the game by making its final six free throws in the 15-point loss.
Matt Williams scored a team-high 20 points for UCF, while B.J. Taylor scored 16, and Tacko Fall 15 with nine rebounds. UCF narrowly out-rebounded Memphis 40-to-35, as the Knights converted on 53.5 percent (23-of-43) of its shots in the game, where Memphis hit 19-of-63 (30.2 percent) in the contest.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, February 7, when the team plays host to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in a 6 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
