Tigers Drop Regular Season Finale to SMU

DALLAS – The Memphis Tigers got 14 points and four rebounds off of the bench from freshman Keon Clergeot and 13 points and five rebounds from Dedric Lawson; however, the strong 14th ranked SMU squad topped the Tigers 103-62 in the season finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers close the regular season with a 19-12 overall record and a 9-9 mark in American Athletic Conference play while SMU improves to 27-4, and a regular season American Athletic Conference Championship.
Jeremiah Martin added 12 points with a team-high five assists for Memphis.
Memphis struck first in the game with a jumper from Martin, and the teams were tied at 4-4 after a pair of Martin free throws, before the hosts scored the next 10 points, and 15 of the next 17 to push ahead by 13 at 19-6.
The margin reached as high as 24 in the first half, as SMU took a 48-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Mustangs came out firing from the gates at halftime, running out a 26-6 start to the second stanza in the first six-plus minutes, and cruised the rest of the way in the win.
Memphis hit 22-of-65 shots from the field (33.8 percent), and made 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) from long range, and 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
SMU made 10-of-17 three-point shots in the first half, and 14-of-28 for the game, while also converting on 60.7 percent (34-of-56) from the field.
The Tigers await their seeding and opponent for the upcoming American Athletic Conference Tournament, to be held in Hartford, Connecticut.
