Colwill wins medalist honors on the second hole of sudden death playoff.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior Sydney Colwill and the University of Memphis women's golf team each claimed wins at the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial, Tuesday. Colwill grabbed individual medalist honors with a win on the second hole of a sudden death playoff while Memphis fired a combined -3 on the final round to take a 13-stroke victory and defend its tournament title.
Memphis had five golfers finish in the top 10 to grab the win with an 860. At the end of 54 holes, Colwill found herself tied with Murray State's Linette Holmslykke at 212 (-1), so the duo embarked on a sudden death playoff. On the second playoff hole, Colwill grabbed the win, her second collegiate victory. The Colwill victory also means a Memphis Lady Tiger won the tournament for the second consecutive season, as Michaela Fletcher won the same event last fall.
"That was a great finish for Sydney," Head Coach Beth Harrelson said. "She birdied 15, 16 and 17 to get into position for the win. For our whole team to shoot three-under today was just a really amazing start to our season."
Fletcher fired the low round of the day, a 68, to finish third at 213 (E).
Madison Thomas and Abby Herrmann rounded out the team scorers. Thomas finished seventh overall, her fifth career top-10 finish, with a 218 (+5), while Herrmann carded a 219 (+6) to finish in a tie for eighth. The tie for eighth is the second career top 10 finish for Herrmann.
Freshman Ana Dawson had a strong first collegiate outing, firing a 214 (71-69-74) to finish in a tie for fourth. Dawson's top five finish means the current Memphis roster now sports four golfers who started their respective college careers with a top five finish: Dawson, Colwill (4that the 2015 Memphis Intercollegiate), Fletcher (t-2ndat the 2014 Cardinal Cup), and Thomas (T-1stat 2015 Memphis Intercollegiate).
Fellow freshman Victoria Gallegos also put the wraps on her first collegiate event at the Payne Stewart, finishing in a tie for 42nd overall with a 232 (80-76-76).
Memphis' Julia Matzat also competed at the event as an individual. Matzat scored a 238 (81-82-75), shaving seven strokes off her second round score to finish in a tie for 58th.
UTEP, who started the final round of play tied with Memphis, finished second with an 873. Murray State was third at 886 and American Athletic Conference counterpart Wichita State finished fourth with an 891.
Memphis will be back in action September 21-23 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina. That three-day event will be hosted by Furman University.
