Tigers secure first win over the Rebels in Oxford since 1995.
OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Memphis one-two punch of Hannah Flowers and Kelsea Bivins combined for 37 kills and 12 digs to lift the Tigers to a thrilling 3-2 win over Ole Miss at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center Tuesday night.
The Tigers won the match by scores of 16-25, 25-21, 30-28, 20-25 and 15-10. Memphis improves its record to 7-5 with its fifth-straight win. The Rebels fall to 9-2 and had their eight-match win streak halted.
Memphis defeated the Rebels for the first time in the series since Oct. 26, 2005. The Tigers' victory in Oxford was the program's first since Oct. 24, 1995. Tuesday's match, though, was only the second between the two Mid-South rivals since 2008. From 1993-2007, the two programs met at least once each season, including two times in four-straight campaigns from 1993-96.
Flowers knocked down a career-high 20 kills, while hitting at a .405 clip. She also had two digs and five total blocks. Bivins added 17 kills and 10 digs.
Flowers and Bivins each had a hand in the match's final two points to give Memphis the victory. A Bivins kill put the Tigers in position to win at 14-10, and a Flowers-Kelsey Walter block followed for the 15-10 set win and 3-2 match victory.
Head coach Sean Burdette comments
"I'm so proud of this team, and how they improve every day in practice. We played a very physical Ole Miss team tonight, and we received contributions from everyone. Hannah and Kelsea led us in kills, but we did a great job spreading our offense around as we had five players with 20 or more attacks. We also did a great job with our blocking. We were physical at the net, and Sarah and Kelsey did an outstanding job occupying their middles. It was a great team effort tonight."
