Tigers Drop Double-Overtime Match to Temple
Oct 12, 2019 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis men's soccer dropped a fierce battle in double overtime against Temple Saturday night, falling 2-1.
Despite being a man down for the second half and overtime periods, the Tigers were able to hold their own until a botched clearance led to Temple's game-winner.
Memphis struck first, tallying a goal in the 12th minute. Freshman Ford Hunt collected the ball on a corner kick from Christoforos Kourtis and finished the shot for his first career goal.
The Owls would respond with a goal in the 25th minute, equalizing the match. Both sides battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half, neither team able to find an advantage.
In the closing seconds of the first half, Memphis received a red card, resulting in the Tigers fielding 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Limited in numbers, the Tigers sat back and played a defensive second half, careful in their counter attacks and limiting mistakes on the ball. Unable to let loose on offense, the Tigers were outshot 9-2 in the second half, but kept Temple at bay, even forcing the Owls to scramble defensively at times.
The first overtime passed without incident, with the Tiger defense keeping Temple's offense slowed to a halt.
Memphis would eventually succumb to being a man down, as a defensive error allowed the Owls to capitalize and score the golden goal.
The Tigers hit the road for their next match, facing conference foe SMU in Dallas, Texas. First touch against the Mustangs is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday, October 18.
