Tough Battle as Men's Soccer Drops Match to Wright State
Sep 01, 2019 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a solid win on Friday, the University of Memphis men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought decision to Wright State by a final of 4-2 on Sunday evening.
After tying the match at 2-2 in the 48th minute, the Tigers allowed a pair of goals late on the clock to suffer their first loss of the season.
The 90 minute battle was a back and forth, physical slugfest for both teams. Freshman midfielder Peter Chang got the scoring started in the 21st minute, creating a look for himself before finishing the shot in the back of the net.
Wright State leveled the contest ten minutes later on a PK after a Raider forward was fouled in the box. Capitalizing on the momentum shift, the Raiders scored again to take the lead.
Memphis had opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half to equalize, with drives into Raider territory and a shot from Artur De Luca, yet found themselves unable to finish chances.
Coming out of the half, Memphis stormed in with newfound intensity, making blitzing charges into the attacking zone. Back on their heels, Wright State committed a foul of its own in the penalty area, allowing Gurman Sangha to attempt the PK in the 48th minute. Although the keeper got a hand on the shot, there was no stopping the equalizing PK from finding the net.
As in the first half, Wright State responded with a goal 10 minutes later. Chances littered the second half for both teams, but the Tigers struggled to finish plays.
In the closing minutes of the match, the Raiders found the goal to ice the decision, scoring again in the 89th minute.
Memphis seeks to regroup before heading on the road for a pair of matches in Birmingham, Ala., to participate in UAB's Soccer for a Cure Classic. The Tigers will face Milwaukee on Friday at 4:30 p.m., before playing Mercer on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Follow the Tigers on social media at /MemphisSoccer and @MemphisMSoccer for more information.
