Memphis Softball starts the Easton Crimson Classic with losses to No 3 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Memphis Softball started its second weekend of competition at the University of Alabama against the Crimson Tide. No 3 Alabama won game one 8-3 and game two 5-1.
GAME 1
Montana Fouts started in the circle for No 3 Alabama Crimson Tide. Fouts would get her fifth win of the season on a big day for the Tide in the circle. She recorded 11 strikeouts and only four hits through 4.1 innings on 82 total pitches. The Tide started the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd as 3rd baseman Maddie Morgan scored on a wild pitch. No 3 Alabama would add three more runs in the third inning.
The Tigers answered the Tide in the top of the fourth as first baseman Kendell Lee hit a monster two run homerun over the left field fence to score Gracie Morton from first to cut the lead to 4-2. The Tigers would record three of their five hits in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, No 3 Alabama scored four in the fourth including a single to right by Morgan to score second baseman Bailey Dowling and Bailey Hemphill to extend their lead to 8-2. The Tigers would get one run back in the top of the fifth, as senior Delaney Smith would score on a wild pitch into the lead. That would be all the scoring however for the first game as No 3 Alabama beat the Tigers 8-3.
Chyennee Ellett got her third start of the game going 3.1 innings giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and 52 total pitches. Mariah Nichols came in relief giving up two runs on two hits. She did however record the only strikeout for the Tigers and had back-to-back three up three down in the fifth and sixth inning.
GAME 2
Mariah Nichols got the start in the circle for game two of the doubleheader against No 3 Alabama. Nichols went five innings giving up 4 earned runs on five hits. She recorded two strikeouts and three walks on 84 total pitches. Senior Krystal Goodman started for the Tide. She went the distance throwing a complete game giving up one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts.
Tigers had some trouble in the field early on in game two, as they had two errors in the first inning that cost them a run as Ellissa Brown of the Tide scored an unearned run on a fly out to right by Bailey Humphill. Second baseman Alyssa Dean also had a throwing error in the bottom of the third.
The Tigers and Crimson Tide traded zeros until the bottom of the fifth when Hemphill singled to center to score Grill from third with two outs, to extend the lead to 2-0. Kailey Tow then came up to bat and hit a three run homerun off of Nichols to left center to make the score 5-0.
Freshman Olivia Johnson replaced Nichols in the center to start the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers showed some life in the top of the seventh as sophomore DP, Brady Rowland, hit a solo homerun to left center to get the Tigers on the board 5-1. Unfortunately after a single from Dean, Meagan Chism hit into a double play to end the game
Up Next
The Tigers will continue their weekend in the Easton Crimson Classic with another doubleheader Saturday against Troy. The Trojans are 11-2 after a split with North Carolina. The Trojans took game one with a shutout against the Tar Heels 2-0. North Carolina got the best of the Trojans in game two however winning 5-2. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4p.m. at the John and Ann Rhoads Softball Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.
