Big first inning looms large as Tigers fall 12-3
Apr 25, 2021 | Baseball
Durham, in an effort to help Memphis (12-26, 2-14) avoid the series sweep, couldn't get into a groove. Tulane jumped on the southpaw's first pitch over and over, as Bennett Lee's RBI single put Tulane (21-13, 10-1) ahead 1-0. Frankie Niemann followed with an RBI double, while Chase Engelhard made it 4-0 Tulane with a two-run single. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Durham nearly got out of the inning, but Ethan Groff's two-run single to centerfield ended the lefty's day on the mound. Landon Kelly got the final out of the inning, but the six-run deficit proved to be too much for the Tigers.
Memphis had a chance to get right back into the game in the home half of the first inning, as Tyler Hoffman (W, 3-1) walked the first three batters that he faced. Hoffman, who had spent nearly 30 minutes between his final pre-game warmup pitches and the bottom of the first inning, buckled in and retired the next three Memphis hitters. The Tulane starter sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around Austin Baskin's sacrifice fly, as Memphis got just one run and trailed 6-1 after one frame.
The Green Wave used station-to-station action in the following two frames to add to their lead, as a leadoff walk came around and scored in the second, while a leadoff HBP did the same in the third. Tulane led 8-1 after 2.5 innings. Hoffman gave up an unearned run in his final frame, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on just one hit over five innings. The righty struck out 10 in the victory.
Tulane's bullpen got the job done in relief of Hoffman, as the Tigers scored just once against a trio of. Ben Brooks homered off of Clifton Slagel to begin the sixth, but that was Memphis' final run of the game. Tulane added on three runs late, two in the seventh against the combination of Darin Cole and Dalton Kendrick, and one in the ninth off of Takoda Metoxen. Tulane finished off the series sweep with a 12-3 win.
After an eight-game homestand, the Tigers will hit the road next weekend with four games in Orlando vs. UCF. Memphis and the Knights will play a doubleheader on Friday with single games Saturday and Sunday. Friday's doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m. at John Euliano Park. All four games of the series will be available on ESPN+.
