Fast Start from Memphis Offense Not Enough to Down Green Wave

NEW ORLEANS, La.- A fast start for Memphis would not hold as they faced off with the Green Wave of Tulane on Wednesday night as they suffered the 81-74 loss in Devlin Fieldhouse.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in AAC play.
The Memphis offense got out to a hot start in the first quarter, scoring 27 points in the opening 10 minutes.
After trading baskets for nearly eight minutes, the Tigers would go on a 13-0 run that saw baskets from Madison Griggs, Alana Davisand Emani Jefferson. Despite Tulane adding in a bucket right as time expired, Memphis would take a 27-17 lead into the second quarter.
The Green Wave would slowly chip away at the Tiger lead as halftime drew near. Tulane held Memphis scoreless in the last 3:53 of the first half and look at a 38-37 Tiger lead going into the break.
Through the first half, the Tiger offense shot 50.0% from the field and an outstanding 72% from three-point range.
Tulane would regain the lead in the third quarter after they opened the second half on a 7-1 run that was capped off by three-pointer from Moon Ursin. The Tigers and Green Wave would trade buckets throughout the quarter, combining for 46 points in the ten-minute span, before taking the 62-59 Tulane advantage into the final quarter.
The Green Wave defense would control the fourth quarter, holding Memphis to no baskets until the 5:38 mark when Lanetta Williams sank two free throws to put Memphis down 10. Hot shooting from Griggs and Jefferson would cut the Tigers deficit to as little as four, but Tulane would add in five made free throws in the final 60 seconds of the game and hand Memphis the 81-74 loss.
Emani Jefferson led the team with 17 points while Jamirah Shutes, Madison Griggs and Alana Davis all scored in double figures. Tyler Frierson pulled down a team-best eight rebounds while Davis grabbed six, four of them on the offensive end.
As a team, Memphis shot just over 40% from the field and went a whopping 12-18 from long range. Both Shutes and Griggs drained four three-pointers each.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Cougars of the University of Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
