Jan 21, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Tigers are back in Bluff City this weekend when they host the Cougars of the University of Houston (9-9, 2-4 AAC) this Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis (10-5, 1-3 AAC) is coming off an 81-74 loss to Tulane that, despite the loss, saw the Tigers shoot lights-out.
After 20 minutes of play, the Tigers shot 72% from three-point range and 50% from the field. Memphis would finish the game going 12-18 from deep, marking the first time since March 2020 that they recorded 10 or more made three-pointers in a game.
Emani Jefferson led the way in scoring for the Tigers with 17 points while Jamirah Shutes, Madison Griggs and Alana Davis all scored in double figures – the third time this season Memphis has had four players score 10+ points in a single game.
For the season, Shutes has been the Tigers constant on the offensive end; through the first half of the season, she is averaging just over 12 points per game. On the defensive side of the ball, Tyler Frierson has been the standout in rebounding for the Memphis defense. She is pulling down just over six rebounds per contest and has recorded nearly 25 more rebounds than the next Tiger player.
Houston, who is currently on a four-game losing skid, is coming off a 71-56 loss to Cincinnati that saw the Cougars in an early hole. Following a 17-4 run from the Bearcats, Houston faced a 26-11 deficit heading in to the second quarter.
The Cougar offense would get a break just before halftime as they went on a 9-0 run in the final six minutes of the half to cut their deficit to 36-25. But Cincinnati would continue their offensive charge in the second half, extending their lead out to as much as 20 before the Bearcats handed Houston the 15-point loss.
For the season, Laila Blair leads the team with 12.4 points per contest while Britney Onueje is adding in 9.5 points. Tatyana Hill has been the Cougars strong point on the boards with 138 total rebounds for an average of just over eight per game.
