Tigers Open 2022 at Home Against Tulsa, SMU

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Tigers will open their American Athletic Conference portion of their schedule this week when they host Tulsa on Wednesday night and SMU on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (9-2) comes into the conference play ranked second in the AAC after their outstanding start to the season. The Tigers, who earned their fifth home win of the season, cruised to a 71-54 win over the Colonels of Nicholls back on December 20. Makaiya Brooksand Jamirah Shutes led the way for the Tigers with 12 points each while Alana Davis and Lanetta Williams both pulled down six rebounds each.
Brooks and Shutes performances earned them AAC Weekly Honors for the week of December 27. Brooks was named as the Freshman of the Week while Shutes was named to the weekly Honor Roll.
For the season, Memphis is shooting just under 40% from the field and they are outscoring their opponents by more than eight points per game.
Tulsa (10-1) comes into conference play at the top of the AAC following their non-conference slate. After opening the season with a perfect 10-0, the Golden Hurricane faced their first loss of the season against San Francisco. Maddie Bittle led the way for Tulsa with 18 points while Rebecca Lescay, Wyvette Maybarry and Delanie Crawford all chipped in double digit points.
For the season, the Golden Hurricane is currently ranked first in NCAA Division I in assist-turnover ratio and second in turnovers per game with just 10.4 per contest.
Maya Mayberry leads the way for Tulsa in scoring this season with 15.7 points/game while her sister, Wyvette Mayberry, as well as Temira Poindexter and Rebecca Lescay are all averaging over 10 points per contest. On the boards, Delanie Crawford had grabbed a team-best 56 rebounds.
In the past, Memphis and Tulsa have matched up well with the overall series favoring the Tigers 12-11. Last season when the two teams met up, Memphis edged past the Golden Hurricane after outscoring them 15-9 in the final quarter. Alana Davis and Coriah Beck led the way with 16 points each while Madison Griggs chipped in seven points.
SMU (6-6) comes into conference play on a two-game win streak after closing non-conference play with back-to-back wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and TCU. In their most recent game against TCU, Kayla White led the way with 21 points while going 9-19 from the field. Savannah Wilkinson had a field day on the boards with a game-high 15 rebounds while also pouring in 16 points.
For the season, Wilkinson leads the Mustangs with 15.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while Kayla White and Sydne Wiggins are adding in 13.3 and 11.7 points per contest.
Memphis has taken two of the last three matchups between the Tigers and Mustangs. The last game that SMU and Memphis played was back in March 2020 where Madison Griggs scored a game-high 24 points after going 7-13 from three-point range and broke the AAC Tournament freshman three-point record with her seven made threes.
Both games this week will be available on ESPN+ with coverage also available on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call. Wednesday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. while Saturday's game has been moved up to a 1 p.m. start time.
Saturday's game is free admission for all.
