Tigers Prepare for Busy Week On The Road

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team has a hefty week ahead of them with three games in five days. They'll play at Southern Illinois on Tuesday night before jetting off to Las Vegas to face-off with St. John's and #6/#9 Indiana on Thursday and Friday, respectively, as part of the Las Vegas Invitational.
Memphis (3-1) is coming off their third consecutive win of the season after cruising to a 94-49 win over SIUE. Tanuyel Welch came off the bench to lead the team with 17 points on 8-12 shooting while Madison Griggs, Emani Jefferson and Jamirah Shutes all hit double figures in scoring.
Hannah Riddick notched her third start of her career. The sophomore grabbed a team-high nine rebounds against the Cougars while going 3-4 from the field.
For the season, Griggs leads the team with 17.0 points per game and is shooting 53% from long range. She currently ranks first in the AAC and fifth in Division I in three-pointers per game and is ranked in the top-10 in the country in total three-pointers made.
Griggs isn't the only one with her name in the national and conference rankings this early in the season; Jada Wright has been a defensive threat for the Tigers with 10 blocks through four games, ranking her first in the conference and 18th in Division I, and is averaging 2.5 blocks per game, ranking her first in the AAC and in the top-25 in the country.
Southern Illinois (0-3) is coming off their third loss of the season after they fell to Northwestern 84-69 this past Saturday afternoon. Promise Taylor came off the bench for the Salukis for a 20-point performance while going 7-11 from the field. She, along with Ashley Jones, combined for nearly half of SIU's points against the Wildcats.
For the season, Taylor and Tyranny Brown lead the team with 10.3 points per game, each, while Laniah Randle has grabbed 20 rebounds over the three-game span.
Tuesday's contest will the 17th all-time meeting between the Tigers and Salukis. The two teams have not played against one another since the 2019-20 season where Memphis came away with the 70-66 win. Jamirah Shutes led the team with 23 points.
St. John's (4-0) comes into the Las Vegas Invitational with four wins under their belt. This past Saturday, they downed Stony Brook 78-52 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Storm would use a 28-point third quarter to push their lead out to as much as 21.
Jayle Everett led St. John's with 16 points while Unique Drake, Mimi Reid and Kadaja Bailey all reached double figure scoring while Jillian Aracher and Ravyen Peeples combined for 23 of the team's 44 rebounds.
The Red Storm has four players averaging double figures in scoring; Bailey leads the team with 16.0 points while Everett, Peeples and Drake are all averaging at least 10.0 points per game.
Friday's game with St. John's will be the fourth meeting between the programs with the most recent one coming back in 2011-12. This will be the first time the Tigers and Red Storms are meeting outside of Queens, N.Y.
Indiana (5-0) has had a fast start to the season, finding themselves ranked in the top-10 in both the Associated Press and WBCA's Polls. Most notably, the Hoosiers picked up a 79-67 win in Knoxville over #11/#4 Tennessee.
In their most recent game, Indiana took down Quinnipiac after forcing them into 27 turnovers while the Hoosiers shot 53% from the field. Mackenzie Holmes led all scorers with 22 points with three other players scoring in double figures.
Holmes currently leads the team with 17.4 points per game while Sara Scalia, Grace Berger and Yarden Garzon are all averaging up to 13.5 points per contest.
Saturday's match up with the Hoosiers will be the fourth meeting between the programs. Memphis and Indiana have not played against one another since the 2010-11 season where the Tigers came away with the 80-71 win in Bloomington.
