Tigers Open FGCU Invitational with Win Over Austin Peay, Fall to Belmont

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Memphis softball team opened their second weekend of the season at the FGCU Invitational with a split; the Tigers would claim the 5-4 win over (RV) Austin Peay but fall 8-4 to the Bruins of Belmont.
Following today's games, Memphis moves to 3-4 overall.

GAME ONE: MEMPHIS: 5, (RV) AUSTIN PEAY: 4
How it happened:
- The Tigers took an early lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Alexis Dale hit a rocket to short and drove in LaNya Batesfor the 1-0 lead.
- Austin Peay would take the lead in the top of the 4th inning after back-to-back RBI hits from Megan Hodum and Kylie Campbell to go up 3-1.
- Memphis would tie the game up in the bottom half of the 4th after Dale picked up her second hit of the day to bring Bates around and Camryn Wineinger drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-3 game.
- After the Governors regained their lead in the top of the 6th, it would be Dale and Wineinger again in the bottom half of the inning with consecutive RBI singles to put the Tigers up 5-4.
- Austin Peay went 0-3 in the top of the 7th inning to give Memphis the win.
- Dale went 3-4 at the plate today while Wineinger and Bates both went 2-3.
- Dale and Wineinger combined for all five Memphis' RBI.
- Hallie Siems got the start today going 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Kailey Hildebrand and Mikayla Hoschak finished out the remaining 3.0 innings of work with Hoschak collecting the win.
GAME TWO: MEMPHIS: 4, BELMONT: 8
How it happened:
- The Memphis offense got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning.
- LaNya Bates scored the first run for the Tigers after a wild pitch from the Bruins pitcher.
- Aliana Zavala picked up the first RBI of the game after a single to center field brought Alexis Dale across home plate.
- With the bases loaded, Dafne Mercado added in a two-run RBI single to right field that scored Zavala and Taylor Smrt to give Memphis the early 4-0 lead.
- Belmont would add four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and another four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to hand the Tigers the 8-4 loss.
- Camryn Wineinger and Aliana Zavala both recorded two hits during the game.
- Mikayla Hoschak got the start for game two while Kailey Hildebrand and Jenna Gibson also made appearances.
- The Tigers will play in the second day of the FGCU Invitational tomorrow when they take on Boston College and (RV) Austin Peay. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
- Memphis will finish out the weekend against host school FGCU on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
