Tigers Drop Series Finale in Thibodaux
Mar 05, 2023 | Baseball
THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped the series finale to Nicholls, 9-2, on Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field. With the loss, Memphis moves to 8-4 on the season.
"Tough game today," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We got out and were chasing six runs right away. It just wasn't the best day for Seth [Garner], but that happens. We still had some competitive at-bats at times. We'll turn the page on this one, go to Monroe and put ourselves in a position to win a game on Tuesday. We'll look to do some positive things there and see if we can start playing a little better as we move forward."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nicholls jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring four on an inside-the-park grand slam with two outs in the inning.
• Brayland Skinner singled in the third inning before back-to-back RBI doubles by RJ Jimerson and Austin Baskin cut into Nicholls' lead and made the score 6-2.
• The Colonels added a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Parker Coddou.
• Nicholls would add another run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
• In the eighth, Coddou doubled in another run to make the score 9-2. That score held and gave the Colonels the win, and the series win.
NOTABLES
• Baskin was 2-for-5 on the day with a pair of doubles and an RBI, marking his seventh multi-hit game through the season's first 11 games. He leads the team in that category.
• Jimerson ended the day 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
• Skinner finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
• Starting pitcher Seth Garner was the pitcher of record for Memphis, taking the loss.
• Daniel Casto pitched the sixth inning and put up a zero, striking out one and allowing one hit.
• Five Tigers pitched in the game. Caden Robinson made his first appearance of his career in the ninth inning.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers head from Thibodaux to Monroe, La., for a mid-week game with ULM at Lou St. Amant Field. The Warhawks are losers of three-straight games and carry an overall record of 5-7.
