Tigers Drop Mid-Week Game at UL-Monroe, 4-3
Mar 07, 2023 | Baseball
MONROE, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped a mid-week game at UL-Monroe, 4-3, on Sunday night at Lou St. Amant Field. With the loss, Memphis moves to 8-5 on the season.
"Tough loss tonight," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Unfortunately, we've dropped three in a row and we're running out of ugly wins. We won some games early and we had a little streak going, but we weren't winning the right way and I think ultimately that caught up to us. We have to get back home this week after this long road trip, coach our guys up, get them to play better and get ready for a tough opponent this weekend in Indiana State."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis struck first when Will Spears, making his second start of the season, doubled with two outs in the second inning to drive in Tyler Heckert who reached on a single and stole second and third base.
• ULM evened the score on an RBI double to left-center field in the bottom of the third inning.
• Both teams threw zeroes on the board until the bottom of the sixth when the Warhawks scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
• The Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-out double by Heckert that brought in Anthony Hansen and Austin Baskin – who came all the way around from first.
• Lefty Dalton Kendrick entered to pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning and proceeded to strike out the side to keep the game tied at three.
• In the bottom of the eighth, Cardell Thibodeaux gave ULM a 4-3 lead with a one-out RBI single into left field.
• Baskin walked to get on base in the ninth, but the next two Tigers went down on strikes and ULM's 4-3 lead proved to be final.
NOTABLES
• Right-handed pitcher David Warren made his third start of the season on the mound and was solid over six innings of work. He allowed eight hits, just a pair of earned runs and struck out six Warhawks.
• Baskin tallied his eighth multi-hit game of the season through a dozen starts, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a walk, raising his season average to .413 (19-for-46).
• Heckert went 2-for-5 in the game with a pair of RBI and stolen bases, a double and a run scored.
• Spears ended the game 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
• Hansen extended his hitting streak to 11 games to begin his Memphis career with a 1-for-4 night that included a run scored.
• Kendrick pitched an electric seventh inning, entering with the bases loaded and striking out the side. Although effective, he was tabbed with the loss after allowing a run in the eighth. The 6-foot-5 lefty struk out five in two innings and carries a season ERA of 2.08 with 19 strikeouts and just three walks allowed.
