No. 13 Memphis Falls on the Road at No. 2 West Virginia

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 13-ranked University of Memphis rifle team fell to No. 2 West Virginia on the road Saturday morning, 4733-4699. The Mountaineers (4-0) won smallbore, 2352-2321, and then beat the Tigers (0-2) in air rifle, 2381-2378.

The Tigers finished just four points shy of the program's air rifle record of 2382 set last season.

"I'm really happy with today's match and I think we saw a lot of improvement from our last match," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "We had a particularly good day in air rifle, being only a few points off our school record. One of the biggest highlights today was Kenlee's school record-tying performance in air rifle. She has been getting better and better every week, so it was awesome to see it come together in a match.

"It's always great to shoot a doubleheader like this and apply what we learned to the second day. We feel really good going into tomorrow's match and know what we need to focus on."

KEY MOMENTS

Junior Gabriela Zych led the way for the Tigers on Saturday, finishing fourth overall with a season-best aggregate score of 1180. Zych posted the team-best total in smallbore with a 584 clip, while finishing second on the team with a 596 in air rifle.
Sophomore Kenlee Ewton was second for Memphis, and seventh overall, with an aggregate of 1178. She carded a 580 in smallbore, but tied the Memphis program record with a 598 in air rifle to lead all athletes on the day.
Graduate Jack Kersey and sophomore Katrina Demerele each shot aggregates of 1174 on the duo posted identical scores in smallbore (582) and air rifle (592).
