Tigers Face Off With Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Memphis women's basketball continues their December road trip with a stop in south Mississippi, taking on Southern Miss on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2:00 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Tigers (2-5) will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak in Hattiesburg following a narrow 78-71 loss that saw the Tigers erase a 19-point deficit but ultimately fall short.
The Golden Eagles (3-6) have played a very similar non-conference schedule to their guests. Both teams lost tight contests to Southeastern, and Southern Miss most recently defeated Mississippi Valley State at home, which Memphis also did in the season's opening game.
Fifth year center Melyia Grayson leads the way for the Golden Eagles with 15.3 points per game, including 19 on Thursday against the Delta Devilettes. Senior guard Bre Sutton is averaging nearly three steals per game and shooting 40 percent from deep.
Southern Miss is led by head coach Joye Lee-McNelis, who coached the Tigers from 1991 to 2004. During her time at Memphis, she won five conference championships and reached the NCAA Second Round and the NIT Final Four. She was a finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1995, and she has been at Southern Miss ever since her departure in 2004.
Memphis faced the Golden Eagles last season at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, a 69-67 thriller that saw Ki'Ari Cain hit a game-winning floater with two seconds remaining. Alasia Smith had eight points, nine boards, seven assists, three blocks and a steal.
Formerly C-USA rivals, the teams will face off for the 56th time on Sunday, with the Tigers owning a 30-25 record including wins in seven of the last 10 matchups.
