MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team heads out on the road for its series against American Athletic Conference newcomer UTSA Thursday through Saturday at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
The Tigers (3-25, 0-9 AAC) dropped their series last weekend against Florida Atlantic. Kennedy Semien recorded her first home run of the season in game one against Florida Atlantic, tallying the Tigers lone run in the matchup.
Memphis is looking to turn things around in get back in the win column this week as it matches up for its first ever series against AAC newcomer UTSA. Last time the two teams met up the games was suspended due to inclement weather (3/3/23).
"We are looking forward to another opportunity against a conference opponent," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro said. "The recipe for success hasn't changed, as I've said to the team daily. We need a good start from the pitchers, clean and solid defense to give us a shot. If we can figure that out and execute, we have a shot to keep it competitive with anyone."
McKaylee Polk is leading the Tigers with a .292 batting average while Arianna Cox-Cole follows closely behind hitting .290 so far on the season. Cox-Cole has notched 20 hits in 25 games played.
Zoe Adebayo leads Memphis with 10 RBI on the season, followed by Khamiyah Brown who has tallied seven with Madison Berner, Polk and Semien with six a piece.
UTSA (9-25, 1-8 AAC) is coming off a 4-2 loss to Lamar on Tuesday night. The Roadrunners are currently holding a four-game losing streak after being swept by AAC foe Wichita State last weekend.
The Roadrunners are hitting .197 as a team while allowing opponents a .309 average at the plate. UTSA is led offensively by Jaylen Prichard with a .262 batting average followed by Taylor Jensen with a .222 average. The Roadrunners have tallied 99 runs with 86 RBI on the season.
UTSA is working with a team ERA of 5.42 and is led in the circle by Jamie Gilbert with a 4.30 ERA recording four wins in 83.0 innings of work.
