SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Memphis softball team dropped game one of its American Athletic Conference series against UTSA, 5-0, Thursday night at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
The Tigers (3-26, 0-10 AAC) started strong, holding the Roadrunners (10-25, 2-8 AAC) hitless through the first four innings. Taniyah Brown recorded a career-high nine strikeouts aiding Memphis in its defensive stand. The Tigers tried to rally by loading the bases in the seventh inning, but they were unable to put runs on the board.
UTSA 5, Memphis 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Taniyah Brown started strong for the Tigers in the circle, striking out two batters in the bottom of the first inning.
• Presley Morris recorded the Tigers' first hit of the night on a two-out single down the left field line in the top of the second frame. Morris reached second after Francesca Lumpp was hit by a pitch, but both runners were left stranded to close the inning.
• Zoe Adebayo tallied her first base hit of the night, singling through the middle in the top of the third. Khamiyah Brown and Lumpp drew walks to load the bases with two outs, but a fly ball at the wall was caught by the Roadrunners to strand the runners and close the inning.
• Morris made a run-saving catch, extending herself in the air behind second base for a highlight grab in the bottom of the fourth frame.
• The Roadrunners got on the board in the bottom of the fifth from a 3-run double to center field from Taylor Jensen.
• Khamiyah Brown singled up the middle for Memphis in the top of the sixth inning, however, the Tigers were unable to cut into the lead.
• UTSA added to its advantage in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch. The Roadrunners put up another run on an RBI single from Kylie Forney that brought in Taryn Madlock.
• Lumpp got things going in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single to left field, but was later forced out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kelsie Adams. Two batters later, Arianna Cox-Cole hit a single to center that put runners on the corners for the Tigers.
• After a steal from Cox-Cole, Marley Maness entered as a pinch-hitter and worked an 8-pitch walk to load the bases. The Tigers could not capitalize, however, as a groundout to short ended the threat and the game.
NOTABLES
• Five Tigers recorded hits in the game: Khamiyah Brown, Cox-Cole, Adebayo, Morris and Lumpp.
• Taniyah Brown got the start in the circle and tossed all six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.
