Apr 19, 2024 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS – The third-seeded Memphis women's tennis team rolled to a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Florida Atlantic late Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championship at Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas, Texas.
Memphis (16-7) advances to Saturday's semifinal against No. 2 Charlotte. The Tigers and 49ers will take the court at 2 p.m.
"I loved the fight from the Tigers," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "These girls are starting to play some great doubles at the right time of the year. Ryan [Haymond] and I are very proud of this group.
"We continue to get wins from different positions each time out and everyone fights hard for each other. I am looking forward to watching this group compete again tomorrow."
For the second time this season, Memphis grabbed the early advantage with the doubles point against the Owls (13-9) while earning victories on courts one and two.
After a win by default from Camila Soares and Monique Woog at No. 1 gave Memphis some early momentum, Emily Meyer and Leonie Moeller secured the point from the second position, winning 6-3 to send the Tigers into singles with a 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers got off to a good start, taking the first set on four of the six courts. Woog and Meyer brought their brooms to Dallas, as each quickly swept their matchup to give Memphis a 3-0 lead.
Woog defeated Carla Galmiche 6-0, 6-2 at the third position before Meyer followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court four.
FAU battled to grab a point on court two, but it wasn't enough as sophomore Tiger Micah Pierce served up the clincher with a 6-4, 6-3 decision from her No. 6 spot. It marked her third-straight singles victory and her 13th overall this season.
Soares (7-6(5), 2-6, 1-3) and Alice Amendola (3-6, 6-3, 2-3) were each in third sets at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions when the victory was earned.
