MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team heads down I-55 for a midweek matchup at Jackson State on Wednesday night at JSU Softball Field with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Tigers (5-37, 1-20 AAC) dropped their American Athletic Conference series to North Texas last weekend and are looking to get back in the win column before hosting their final homestand this week.
This will be the third matchup this season for Memphis and Jackson State, the team splitting the first two games in the Bluff City in March, Memphis taking game one 4-1 before falling 3-4 in game two. Memphis holds an edge in the all-time series, 7-4.
"This midweek [game] is another opportunity for us to compete. We need a good start from our pitcher and clean defense to give us a shot," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro said.
Mckaylee Polk leads the Tigers at the plate with a .284 batting average this year with Arianna Cox-Cole and Zoe Adebayo following at .267 and .265 averages, respectively. Cox-Cole is the Tigers' top base stealer, swiping 13 on the year, tying fourth-most in the conference.
Adebayo continues to be a leading run producer for the Tigers, driving in a team-high 18 RBI while scoring 10 of her own.
Taniyah Brown paces the team with 113.2 innings in the circle in 25 appearances this season, eighth most in the conference, and has recorded 65 strikeouts this season. Rylee Dugar follows with 76.2 innings of work.
Jackson State (27-14, 14-6 SWAC) is currently holding a two-game win streak after taking its conference series against Alabama A&M last weekend.
Jackson State carries a .259 batting average led by Jace Jackson slashing a team-best .355/.524/.434 with 34 RBI and 28 runs this season.
Mari Stephens and Ka'Liyah Gipson also play a role in the JSU offense tallying 29 and 28 stolen bases, respectively, both ranking within the top 10 nationally.
Jackson State sports a 4.26 team ERA and is led in the circle by Victoria Salazar's 3.28 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 142.2 innings pitched. Salazar recorded a win against Memphis earlier this season going seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits with one strikeout.
