Tigers Take Down Bobcats 3-1

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Memphis Volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win against Montana State to open the Webb-Burbridge Classic Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers (6-4) were led by Hannah Jones who had a career-high 20 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Clara Bednarek followed behind with 13 kills and Tabytha Toelke contributed 12.
Defensively, Memphis recorded 75 digs, led by Abigail Schlueter with 23, while Mackenzie Leach and Toelke both added 14 digs. Bednarek had a significant presence at the net tallying seven blocks.
The first set saw back-and-forth action until Memphis used a 7-2 run with kills from Bednarek, Toelke, and Tiffany Snook to go up 16-11. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas, pushing through to win the set 25-20.
Memphis opened up the second set with a small lead, going up 9-6. However, Montana State fought back to tie the set 13-13. With huge blocks at the net, the Tigers were able to grab the lead back at 19-16.
The Bobcats clawed their way back once again, winning the last six out of seven points taking the second set 25-23.
The third set stayed in a contested battle for most of the set, neither team having more than a two-point advantage. Montana State went on a 3-0 run to go up 12-9, however, Memphis responded with a four-point run of their own. The set continued back and forth until the Tigers were able to pull away winning the last three points to put the set away 25-23.
Memphis carried the momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. Montana State bounced back with a 4-0 run to settle the score 12-12. Both teams kept the score close, neither team having more than a three-point edge. With kills from Bednarek, Snook and Jones, the Tigers sealed the deal with a 28-26 victory.

The Tigers will close out the Webb-Burbridge Classic tomorrow, playing against Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. and No. 14 Arizona State at 9 p.m. All times are central standard time.
