Jan 29, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's basketball fell to Charlotte on Wednesday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, 67-59.
The Tigers (4-15, 2-6 AAC) cut an early 15-point deficit all the way down to two but were unable to complete the comeback in the final quarter. Tilly Boler's 19 points was a game-high, and DeeDee Hagemann 12 points and two assists to reach 501 career dimes, just the 18th active player to reach 500. Alasia Smith recorded her sixth double-double in eight conference games, posting 10 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and three blocks. She is just the ninth player in Division I this season to record a double-double, three steals and three blocks.
Memphis got on the board first, but Charlotte scored 17 unanswered points to build a 15-point advantage. After the 49ers scored on seven of nine possessions, Memphis began to bunker down on defense, getting stops on six of the next seven possessions at the end of the first and beginning of the second period.
Two straight Buckets from Boler and a putback from Layken Cox cut the lead to seven, and the halftime buzzer put a pause into Memphis' momentum. The Tigers continued to chip away, cutting it to two in the third quarter thanks to 10-for-11 free-throw shooting.
Buckets were tough to come by in the fourth quarter, as Memphis hung around but could never tie or take the lead in the second half. The Tigers endured a five-minute scoring drought as the Niners expanded their lead to 11 before the Tigers went on a quick 8-4 run to get back in it in the final minute.
Neither team cracked a 40% field goal percentage, the first time that has occurred in a Memphis game this season as the host Tigers shot a season-low 29%. Charlotte had 34 points in the pain to Memphis' 22, and their bench outscored the Tigers, 28-6. Keanna Rembert led the Niners with a season-high 17 points and six rebounds.
Memphis will be back at home this Saturday, Feb. 1, to take on East Carolina at 2:00 p.m.
