Tigers Defeated at UTSA
Feb 15, 2025 | Women's Basketball
SAN ANTONIO – Memphis women's basketball was defeated by UTSA, 80-61, on Saturday afternoon inside the Convocation Center.
The Tigers (6-18, 4-9 AAC) held a half-time lead but were unable to complete the victory as UTSA (22-3, 13-1 AAC) remained undefeated at home in the 2024-25 season. With conference assist leader DeeDee Hagemann out, Tanyuel Welch stepped into the point guard role, delivering 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Tilly Boler had 12 points, and Alasia Smith had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Like the first contest in Memphis, where the Roadrunners took a 70-68 victory, the first quarter was tightly contested as a quick five points and assist from Welch gave the visitors a 7-4 lead. Four consecutive UTSA scoring possessions in tandem with a three-minute field goal drought from Memphis gave the hosts a lead, but the Tigers hung around thanks to accurate jump shooting.
After allowing four offensive rebounds in the first five minutes of the game, Memphis held the third-best rebounding team in the country to just one for the rest of the period as the teams finished one quarter tied. Five quick points from Tamya Smith capped a 9-0 Tiger run, but UTSA chipped the lead to two thanks to 3-of-6 three-point shooting in the second stanza.
The Roadrunners opened the second half with a 9-2 run as the elongated road trip and high player minutes led to signs of fatigue for the Tigers. Sturdy defense allowed the visitors, who only scored 12 points in the quarter, to hang around as UTSA shot just 27.8% en route to a five-point lead after three quarters.
The Tiger offense was completely stifled in the final quarter; after an Elauna Eaton three made it a four-point game, UTSA rattled off a 17-2 run behind 10 trips to the charity stripe.
The Roadrunners turned 18 offensive rebounds – just above their average of 16 per game – into 25 second-chance points. Nina De Leon Negron and Aysia Proctor led the way with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Tigers will be back home this Wednesday, Feb. 19, to take on UAB at 7:00 p.m. at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
