Mar 29, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two of a three-game American Athletic Conference series to Charlotte, 7-4, on Saturday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
The Tigers moved to 11-15 (0-5 AAC) on the season while the 49ers improved to 13-12 (3-2 AAC).
"We're in a rut and we just have to find a way out of it," head coach Matt Riser said. "We have to continue to stay persistent in what we're trying to do and get better at the plate."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The 49ers got on the board in the top of the first when Noah Furcht took Memphis starting pitcher David Case deep for a solo shot to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead early.
• Memphis responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by James Smith IV that scored Daniel Perez and Will Vasseur to take the lead.
• Charlotte grabbed the lead right back in the top of the second inning. The 49ers tied the game with a sac-fly before Furcht game Charlotte the lead with a two-out RBI single.
• Dawson Bryce hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-2 lead for Charlotte. The 49ers added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Cody Grunderson and Bryce to grow their lead to 6-2.
• The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Perez reached on an errant throw and Cy Turner came around to score.
• Bryce knocked in another run with his third run-scoring hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning to grow Charlotte's lead back to four.
• A pinch-hit solo shot by Cade Tucker gave the Tigers life in the ninth, but it was too little, too late as Charlotte took the game by a score of 7-4 and clinched the series win.
