Tigers Defeated in Regular Season Finale
Mar 04, 2025 | Women's Basketball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Memphis women's basketball dropped the regular season finale at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday evening by a score of 69-62.
Tamya Smith led the Tigers with a career-high-tying 21 points, and Elauna Eaton had 11 points – all in the second half – behind three three-pointers.
It took nearly two minutes for either team to score, but Layken Cox broke the seal and found a quick four points thanks to a putback and two free throws. The Tigers (7-22, 5-13 AAC) grabbed an 8-2 lead before going cold on offense, closing the quarter with just one made field goal in their final nine attempts. The Florida Atlantic offense didn't exactly flourish, but they used their stops to take a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the second quarter, but FAU (11-20, 3-15 AAC) responded with a 12-4 run to extend their lead to 11. Memphis – the best three-point shooting team in the conference – could not buy a long ball, missing all ten of their attempts in the first half, their third half this season without a make from distance. They were nonetheless able to muster an 8-3 close to half to trail, 32-26.
Scoring struggles for the visitors continued after the break, as FAU went on a 9-0 run across the opening 5:32. The Tigers trailed 41-26 before scoring 11 unanswered points over 2:37 to cut the deficit to four. Those 11 points would be all Memphis found in the frame; the Owls scored once more to take a 43-37 lead into the final quarter.
Florida Atlantic's Mya Perry scored nine of her 31 points in the opening three minutes of the final quarter, but Smith kept the Tigers in it with seven of her own in the quarter's opening minutes. Memphis kept the lead within single digits but could not get it within five as FAU shot 9-for-11 from the line to keep the Tigers at bay.
Outside Perry's 31 points, the Owls got 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds from Stefanie Ingram. Memphis shot just 37.7% from the field which got Florida Atlantic into transition, scoring 22 points on the fast break.
The loss had no significance on Memphis' conference tournament seeding; they will be the No. 10 seed and will battle the No. 7 seed in the second round of the conference tournament. The full bracket will be confirmed following Thursday's game between Tulane and South Florida.
