Apr 16, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to host Rice at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field, Thursday-Saturday for a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
The series kicks off Thursday night at 6:05 p.m. before another 6:05 p.m. start on Friday night. Saturday's series finale is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. first pitch. All three games can be streamed live on ESPN+ with Jeff Brightwell and Greg Gaston Sr. on the call.
FedExPark will play host to the 35th, 36th and 37th all-time meetings between the two programs. Last season, Memphis swept Rice at Reckling Park in Houston to mark the first road conference sweep for the Tigers since taking all three games at the University of Houston in 2012 when the Tigers were still members of Conference USA.
Memphis (15-21, 3-9 AAC) is coming off a 13-3 run-rule win at Central Arkansas on Tuesday night following a series victory over Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton over the weekend where the Tigers won a pair of one-run games on Saturday (8-7) and Sunday (5-4). The Owls were fresh off a sweep of preseason-AAC favorite East Carolina the weekend prior.
Outfielder Cade Greer was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll for his performance last week. The Lewisburg, Mississippi, native hit safely from the lead-off spot in the Tiger lineup in all three games over the weekend to help Memphis earn the series win. He scored six runs during the series to earn a share of the conference lead in that category for the week.
Greer hit a solo home run to the opposite field that proved to be the eventual winning run in Sunday's series-clinching win. For the week, he hit .364, slugged .727 and got on base at a .563 clip due being plunked three times and walking twice to go along with his four hits.
Greer picked up where he left off with a 2-for-4 night with a double, two RBI, two runs and a walk vs. UCA on Tuesday. Also having standout nights at the plate in the seven-inning win were Chase Nixon (3-for-5, HR short of cycle) and Will Vasseur (5 RBI).
Rice (9-30, 3-9 AAC) is coming off a home weekend series win over South Florida (20-14, 8-4 AAC) last weekend where the Owls picked up a 15-3 win on Saturday before winning the finale over the Bulls, 5-2.
The Owls are led offensively by Blaine Brown (.317 AVG. / 6 HR / 29 RBI), Landon West (.278 AVG. / 7 2B / 15 RBI) and Hiram Bocachica Jr. (.271 AVG. / 3 HR / 17 RBI / 10 SB).
The Tigers will roll out RHP Seth Garner (2-4, 3.51 ERA) for his 10th start of the season on Thursday, followed by LHP David Case (1-4, 6.39 ERA, 50 K) on Friday. Rice will counter with RHP Tucker Alch (3-2, 4.14 ERA) on Thursday and LHP J.D. McCracken (1-3, 5.53 ERA) on Friday. Both teams will announce a starter for Saturday's finale at a later time.
Entering the week, Tiger catcher Jonah Sutton was T-No. 4 nationally in runners thrown out from behind the plate (15) and is now 15-of-32 (47%) from behind the dish. As a team, Memphis has thrown out 51 percent of runners stealing on the season (19-of-37) as Justin Fogel is 4-for-5 on the year.
After ranking 12th nationally with 54 double plays turned a season ago, the Tigers have turned 33 through the season's first 36 games and rank 14th nationally in that category.
The Memphis pitching staff has been another highlight through the first half of the season, combining for a 4.80 ERA (309.2 IP) to rank fourth in The American and 59th nationally. The Tiger bullpen has accounted for 159.2 of those innings and has given up 80 earned runs for a bullpen ERA of 4.51.
