OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Memphis volleyball team went on the road Tuesday night and fell in straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) to Ole Miss at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center in Oxford.
The Tigers dropped to 7-3 on the season, while the Rebels improved to 5-3 overall.
Memphis recorded 33 total kills, led by outside hitter Amanda Hardt with 14. Setter Maddy Bach dished out a team-best 26 assists, while Abigail Schlueter paced the way with seven digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening frame was a back-and-forth battle with 15 ties and 16 lead changes. Memphis used a pair of service aces from Mandy Lawson to build a 16-13 advantage midway through the frame, while kills from Hardt and Zaniah Hoskins kept the Tigers in front late. Ole Miss responded with a 5-2 run to help level the score at 22-all, then closed the set on back-to-back points for a 25-23 win. Hardt and Hoskins paced the Tigers early with four kills each in the first set alone.
The second set followed a similar script. After Ole Miss jumped out to a 5-1 lead, Memphis clawed back behind eight combined kills from Hardt and Hoskins to cut the deficit to 15-14. The Rebels responded with a 9-4 run to bring the frame to set point at 24-18. However, Memphis fought off four set points with three-straight Ole Miss errors and a block from Brianna Washington and Za'Niya Boyles, pulling within 24-22. The Rebels held on, however, as Shayla Meyer put down the clinching kill to take the frame, 25-22. Hardt led the way with seven of the team's 12 kills in the set.
Memphis came out strong to begin the third, rattling off five straight points to grab a 7-5 edge, capped by kills from Hardt and Boyles. The Tigers still led 11-8 after a service ace by Schlueter, but Ole Miss answered with a 6-1 run to regain control. Memphis stayed within striking distance until late, when the Rebels used key kills from Gabi Placide and Meyer to close on a 7-3 spurt and seal the match, 25-19.
