Memphis Falls to UCF in Final Match of Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Memphis (7-5) fell to UCF (9-3) in four sets inside Foster Auditorium to close out the Crimson Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCF opened the first set on a 6-3 run before Jasmyn Tate, Riley McCloskey and Janyah Henderson combined for several kills to tie it at 9-9. The teams traded points until a late ace from Skylar English gave the Knights a 22-17 lead. Sasha Cohen tallied five kills and Abby Schomers dished out nine assists as UCF closed the frame, 25-21.
The second set stayed tight early, but the Knights pulled ahead 10-7 and maintained control. Memphis fought back with kills from Za'Niya Boyles and Brianna Washington, but English and Cohen carried UCF to another 25-21 win.
The Tigers responded in the third set with an 8-0 run to seize momentum. UCF cut into the deficit behind kills from Reaghan Thompson and two service aces from Fallon Stewart, but Memphis answered with Henderson and Hoskins kills, plus a block from Boyles and Henderson, to secure a 25-21 victory.
UCF wasted no time in the fourth, opening with a 6-0 run and never looking back. The Knights ended the match on another 6-0 push to take the set, 25-15.
NOTABLES
- · Janyah Henderson had 13 kills and six total blocks in the loss, both marks that led the team.
- o Henderson and Zaniah Hoskins eclipsed the 100 kill mark during the Crimson Classic, currently sitting at 113 and 110 kills, respectively.
- · Za'Niya Boyles set her season high in kills with six.
- · Sydney Marshall recorded a season high with 19 assists, leading Memphis for the first time this season.
- · Abigail Schlueter set her career high in aces with five.
- · Jasmyn Tate set a new season high for the second time in as many matches with 10 kills.
- · Riley McCloskey made her first collegiate start.
UP NEXT
Memphis return to Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Tuesday to face Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. before opening American Conference play at Tulane on Friday. These matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
