BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Memphis women's basketball travels to Birmingham for a Tuesday night showdown with UAB set for 6 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
The Tigers (8-14, 2-7 American) will have an opportunity to quickly wash out the taste of their loss to Rice this past Saturday. After a back-and-forth three quarters, the Owls pulled away to win their 15th consecutive game, 82-65.
With half of the conference season in the books, both UAB and Memphis have two conference wins, making this an important game for each team's conference tournament chances. Under the new American Conference format, the top 10 teams will qualify; the squads will face off again in Memphis on March 4.
After starting 0-8 in conference play, the Blazers (9-14, 2-9 American) won two in a row before falling on Saturday at Florida Atlantic. They will get a bye week after this game, but their schedule is far from favorable with trips to North Texas and Tulsa on the immediate horizon.
UAB has five players averaging double-digit scoring, led by 5-foot-9 guard Cali Smallwood with 14.4 points. They rank 38th nationally in three-pointers per game, shooting an impressive 36.1% on nearly 23 attempts per night. Their Achilles' heel has been on the glass; they are 328th of 359 schools in rebounding margin losing by an average of 5.9 boards per night.
Memphis and UAB split their regular season battles in 2024-25, with Memphis taking the most recent on February 19 thanks to a 37-7 run across the second and third quarters. The Tigers hold an all-time advantage of 35-23 thanks to a six-game winning streak from 2012 to 2018, but neither team has won two in a row since the Blazers joined the American in 2023-24.
Randy Norton is in his 13th season with the Blazers, nearing 250 wins as head coach in Birmingham. Freshman forward Ashlyn Howard and Memphis sophomore Jordan Hunter played together at Hewitt-Trussville High School in in Trussville, Alabama, where they reached the 7A state championship game in 2024.
