Head men’s soccer coach Richard Mulrooney announced the addition of Kevin Tello as an assistant coach just before the start of the 2022-23 season.
Memphis made even more history during the 2023 season when the Tigers shocked the soccer world following a 1-0 win over then 9th-ranked Missouri State. The Tigers, who collected the team's first 10+ win season since 2019, got their second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament where they hosted the First Round at the Track & Soccer Complex and collected a 2-1 win over 24th-ranked SIUE - both firsts for the program. Forward Lineker Rodriguez dos Santos, who was the unanimous selection for the AAC's Offensive Player of the Year went on to earn United Soccer Coaches All-American honors.
In his first season with the Tigers, Tello coached three to All-AAC Team honors in Alberto Cruz, Lineker Rodriguez dos Santos and Colin Welsh while Rodriguez dos Santos, Welsh and Cam Weston were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Team. The Tigers, who finished the season with a 9-6-4 overall record, earned the team's first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after Memphis took down nationally-ranked Tulsa in the AAC Championship Quarterfinals. In addition, the Tigers would collect wins over then undefeated Green Bay and No. 23 UCF while taking draws with No. 13 Charlotte and No. 12 Lipscomb.
Tello comes to Memphis after serving as the head coach at National Park College in Hot Springs, Ark. last season. He also helped coach with the Little Rock Rangers Soccer Club where he developed four players to sign a professional contract, two players to represent their country at the international level and participated in the 2019 US Lamar Hunt Open Cup.
Prior to his stint with NPC, Tello spent time as a Volunteer Assistant Coach and the Director of Soccer Operations at the University of Arkansas. While with the Razorbacks, Tello managed all off-field development while assisting in training sessions and video analysis for the Southeastern Conference regular season winners. During the season, Arkansas reached a national ranking as high as No. 3.
Tello spent three seasons at Hendrix College where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Warriors, he helped recruit players that averaged a 3.4 GPA, worked to help coordinate a team strength and conditioning program, managed all aspect of team functions outside of the field, and was part of a team that recorded their first conference game in eight years and the program’s first victory over Southern Athletic Conference rival, Berry College.
An alum of Ouachita Baptist University, Tello graduated in 2014 with a degree in Kinesiology. He graduated from the University of Central Arkansas in 2017 with a master’s degree in Teaching.
