MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- - The Tiger Volleyball team fell to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA with a 3-1 loss to DePaul at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Saturday.
The Tigers refused to be intimidated by a DePaul team that was 2-0 in league play and 9-3 overall. The two teams traded leads and had numerous ties in the opening game, which the Tigers won 15-13. But an experienced Blue Demon line-up dominated the second game, hitting .364 to Memphis' .118 in a 15-3 loss.
Game three initially appeared to sway toward Memphis, but DePaul began attacking the Tigers with four different hitters. Despite actually having a better hitting percentage in the third game, (.176 to .162) the Tigers fell, 15-10.
Game four in the un-air-conditioned Fieldhouse was another battle as both squads battled each other and the humidity. Neither team hit very well, Memphis hit .082 on 49 attacks, while DePaul hit .122 in the eventual 15-11 win.
The Tigers will not see home court for awhile, playing at South Alabama, Thursday, at Tulane, Friday and at Southern Miss, Sunday. The next Tiger homestand is Oct. 6-7 against South Florida and Houston. The USF match begins at 7 p.m., Oct. 6th, while the Houston match has been moved to 3 p.m. to allow Tiger fans to attend both the volleyball match and the Tiger football game against East Carolina at 7 p.m.
