MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis men's soccer team created several scoring opportunities in the match's final 18 minutes, but was unable to get the equalizer and fell to Connecticut 1-0 in the Tigers American Athletic Conference home opener at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex Saturday.
With the loss, Memphis fell to 5-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league action. The Huskies improved to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
Trailing 1-0, the Tigers offense heated up late in the match. Memphis had six of its 13 shots and its lone corner kick in the match's final 18 minutes. Memphis' best two scoring chances came late off two of Raul Gonzalez's crosses into the box that his Tigers teammates were unable to get into the net. On Gonzalez's second cross, UConn keeper Scott Levene juggled the ball before securing it for the clear.
In the first half, the Huskies came out as the aggressors. In the 20th minute, Dylan Greenburg received the ball off a deflection off of a Cody Uzcategui block and shot it right back into the right side of the net. The goal was Greenberg's first of the season.
Memphis out-shot Connecticut 13-9, but the Huskies held a 4-1 corner kick advantage. Levene, in his first start in net, made four saves for UConn. Tigers keeper Cody Uzcategui made five saves.
Memphis returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Dallas, Texas, for an American Athletic Conference match against SMU. Match time is 7 p.m. (CT).
